While serving as music director at KBRQ radio in Denver during the 1980s, I had the privilege of recording many of my original country songs with engineer/guitarist John Macy. Your Hiding Place was released as a 45rpm single in 1986, earning an impressive amount of national airplay exposure and becoming a popular jukebox record in several markets before breaking into the national charts.
Moving on to KWKH in Shreveport, Louisiana I enjoyed similar progress recording a number of tracks at Red River Studio in Bossier City (1988-89). Famed studio engineer Ron Capone turned the knobs on my song Tallest Tale in Texas, an up-tempo shuffle tune, intended as a single but un-released due to budget concerns. I’m really proud to finally feature it on this collection nearly three decades later.
Settles Hotel, already penned, was recorded after our move to Austin, Texas, and engineered by Jim Watts, then finished at Parrot Tracks Studio under the direction of George Coyne. Released as a video single (video by Tom Arcand), it appeared on an enhanced CD in 2006. Holly and Texas Has it All were recorded at Music Lane in Austin during the early 90s, for my CD, Elysian Fields.
The Oklahoma Kid and Swamp Thang, from my Colorado sessions, were also singles that waited decades to see the light of day. All the other songs on this collection were recorded at Parrot Tracks during the past decade. My thanks to George Coyne for co-producing all my 21st Century albums thus far. The list of players on all these tracks is truly amazing! I thank them all for helping make this music.
My early country LPs,
Honky Tonk Fantasies (with duet partner Stephen L. Fulton) and Tails Out, were digitally
remastered in 1999 and released as The West of Jim Stricklan. In 2006 the Country Man
CD added even more country songs to my discography. Now, a decade later, Country
